Mathew raises high the Golden Spurtle

An American has scooped this year’s prize for the world’s best porridge.

Mathew Cox, from Milwaukie, Oregon in the US, has won this year’s Golden Spurtle award at the World Porridge Championships in Invernessshire.

The 2008 champion, Ian Bishop, made it to the final cook off in Carrbridge but was beaten by the American.

Mr Cox said: “We came over here to celebrate our passion for porridge with the Scots and we are just elated to win the world title…”

The competition coincided with the first World Porridge Day, organised by Argyll-based charity May’s Meals, held in aid of hungry children in developing countries.

There were also events in the US, France, Malawi, Bosnia and Sweden.

Being part of a family that starts every day of the year off with porridge oats – that includes our dogs having their share – I’m certainly pleased to learn there is an official World Porridge Day, now.
